Every year, as soon as the air turns crisp and the stores start to sparkle with holiday lights, I’m tempted to pull out my Christmas bins. But my son’s birthday falls right in the middle of November, and he always asks me to wait until after his big day before decorating for Christmas. Between sports, school events, and the general busyness of life, I often find myself scrambling to get everything up in time to actually enjoy it all December long.

Over the years, I’ve learned that the key to keeping things calm and joyful — instead of rushed and stressful — is to start planning early, even if I don’t start decorating early. You can absolutely prepare for a beautiful, vintage-inspired Christmas without stealing the spotlight from Thanksgiving (or November birthdays!).

Here’s how I start early, stay organized, and make sure our home feels collected, cozy, and full of charm by the time the season begins.

1️⃣ Shop Now While the Best Finds Are Out

Whether you’re hunting for new pieces or one-of-a-kind vintage treasures, now is the time to start shopping. Thrift stores already have their Christmas sections stocked, and the best vintage decor always goes quickly. If you’re planning to replace a few items — like greenery, ribbon, or ornaments — start keeping an eye out now before selections get picked over.

Early shopping also lets you be intentional about what you bring home. You’ll have time to mix textures, colors, and finishes in a way that feels cohesive rather than rushed together in a last-minute scramble.

2️⃣ Start Planning Where Your Decor Will Go

You don’t have to put anything up yet — just plan your spaces. I usually decorate the same general areas each year (the mantel, entryway, and dining table), but I don’t always use the same pieces. As I thrift and collect new finds, I like to feature different items or change how they’re displayed.

Take a quick walk through your home with a notepad or your phone and jot down the spaces you’ll decorate. Snap a few photos if it helps. Then, when you’re ready to start pulling out bins or arranging greenery, you’ll already have a plan in place — no guesswork, no overwhelm.

3️⃣ Make a List of What You’re Looking For

This is one of my favorite steps. Creating a running list helps you stay focused when you’re thrifting or browsing online. Separate it into two columns:

  • Must-Find Items: Things you know you need (like replacement garlands, missing candleholders, or a tree skirt).
  • Wish List Items: The dreamy vintage pieces you hope to find someday — like an old mercury glass tree topper or brass reindeer.

Having a plan keeps you from overbuying and makes thrifting more intentional. You’ll also know instantly when you’ve spotted something special worth bringing home.

4️⃣ Use “Placeholder” Pieces Until You Find the Real Thing

When you’re decorating with vintage or antique finds, patience is part of the process — and that’s okay! I love using temporary “placeholder” items until the perfect piece comes along.

For example, if I’m searching for a vintage brass candlestick but haven’t found one yet, I’ll use a modern version in a similar shape or finish. Or if I’m dreaming of a vintage Santa mug set but can’t track one down, I’ll display simple white mugs with a sprig of greenery until I do.

The goal is progress, not perfection. Your home can still look festive and complete while you slowly curate the meaningful, collected pieces that make it truly yours.

✨ Closing Thought

Decorating for Christmas shouldn’t feel like a race — especially when your style is centered around nostalgia and intention. By shopping and planning early, keeping a wish list, and embracing temporary stand-ins, you can enjoy every part of the process. When December rolls around, you’ll have a home that feels cozy, collected, and ready to make new memories.
