One of my favorite things about thrifting is finding pieces that work hard in my home. Items that don’t just look good, but actually make everyday life easier.
That’s the idea behind this series: One Thrifted Item, Three Uses. Each week, I’m sharing a common thrift store find and three simple ways to use it throughout your home.
This week’s featured item: trays.
Trays are one of those thrift store staples that never go out of style. They’re easy to find, affordable, and endlessly versatile—no matter your decor style.

Thrifted Trays for Easy Everyday Organization
Trays are perfect for creating “drop zones” around your home. They instantly make everyday clutter feel intentional and styled.
Some of my favorite ways to use thrifted trays for organization include:
- Entryway trays for keys, wallets, and sunglasses
- Bathroom trays for daily essentials
- Kitchen counter trays for oils, salt, and frequently used items
When thrifting trays, I look for sturdy materials like wood, metal, or stone, and I don’t worry too much about scratches or wear. A little patina just adds character.
Tip: Choose trays slightly larger than you think you need. Extra space keeps them from feeling crowded.
Coffee Table and Surface Styling with Thrifted Trays
Trays are a styling secret weapon for coffee tables, consoles, and nightstands. They help group items together so surfaces feel layered—not cluttered.
I love using trays to:
- Anchor books and decorative objects
- Hold candles or small plants
- Add contrast through texture or shape
A tray gives your eye a place to rest and makes even simple items feel styled on purpose.
Styling tip: Stick to odd numbers and vary heights inside the tray for a more collected look.

Shelf Styling and Storage Solutions Using Thrifted Trays
Trays aren’t just for flat surfaces—they work beautifully on shelves too.
On shelves, trays are great for:
- Holding smaller decor pieces together
- Creating structure on open shelving
- Storing items you want accessible but contained
I like using trays as a base layer on shelves, then stacking books or decorative objects on top for depth and dimension.
Design tip: Trays with low sides or open handles work best on shelves so the display doesn’t feel boxed in.
Why Thrifted Trays Are a Home Decor Staple
Trays are one of those items I always grab when thrifting because I know I’ll find a use for them somewhere. They’re practical, timeless, and easy to move around as your needs change.
If you’re new to thrifting home decor, trays are a great place to start—they’re low commitment but make a big impact.
