Thrifted baskets are one of the most versatile items you can decorate with!

One of my favorite things about thrifting is finding pieces that work hard in my home. Items that don’t just sit there looking pretty—but actually earn their keep.

That’s the idea behind this new series: One Thrifted Item, Three Uses.

Each week, I’ll take a common thrift store find and show you three practical, stylish ways to use it around your home. We’re starting with one of the most versatile secondhand finds of all…

Baskets.

They’re affordable, easy to find, and endlessly useful. Whether you love a cozy, layered look or a more minimal style, baskets can fit right in.

Thrifted baskets are a great way to store everyday items you use often!

Thrifted Baskets for Everyday, Easy Storage

Baskets are a storage workhorse—but the key is using them intentionally so they feel like décor, not clutter control.

Some of my favorite storage uses include:

  • Blankets or throws in the living room
  • Toys or games that need quick clean-up
  • Extra pillows tucked beside a sofa or chair
  • Shoes or bags in an entryway

When thrifting baskets, I look for sturdy handles, neutral tones, and natural textures. Even worn-in baskets add charm—scuffs and patina make them feel collected, not mass-produced.

Tip: Use baskets to store the things you reach for often. If it’s easy to grab and easy to put back, it’s more likely to stay tidy.

Coffee Table Basket Styling That’s Both Pretty and Practical

A basket on a coffee table instantly makes the space feel more layered and intentional—and it keeps small items from looking scattered.

I love using a low-profile basket or tray-style basket to:

  • Hold remotes and coasters
  • Corral books and candles
  • Add texture to an otherwise flat surface

The basket acts as an anchor, giving everything on the table a “home.” It’s especially helpful if your coffee table gets used daily and needs to stay functional.

Styling tip: Keep the basket slightly smaller than the table so there’s still breathing room. Add one or two items inside, not five—less really is more here.

Baskets are a great addition when styling shelves – whether for storage or just adding texture.

One of the things I love most about vintage baskets is how versatile they are — no two are ever quite the same, and each one brings its own texture and character to a space. When I’m looking for similar pieces, I tend to focus on shape and patina rather than perfection. I keep a small curated collection of vintage basket styles I love here, which makes it easy to browse similar finds when I’m looking to add another to my home.

Shelf Styling and Storage Ideas Using Thrifted Baskets

Shelves can easily become cluttered, especially when you need them to do more than just look pretty. That’s where baskets really shine.

On shelves, baskets are perfect for:

  • Hiding cords, chargers, or tech accessories
  • Storing office supplies or craft items
  • Balancing open décor with concealed storage

I like mixing baskets with books and decorative objects to create contrast—soft textures against hard lines. Matching baskets can feel clean and cohesive, while mismatched ones add a more collected, lived-in look.

Design tip: Choose baskets that fit the shelf height well. Too tall and they look crammed; too short and they lose visual impact.

Add baskets to the list of items to look for on your next thrifting trip!

Why Thrifted Baskets Are a Home Decor Staple

Baskets are one of those items I always keep an eye out for when thrifting. They’re usually inexpensive, timeless, and incredibly adaptable.

If you’re new to thrifting décor, baskets are a great place to start—they’re forgiving, practical, and work in almost any room.
